Personal Development
Personal Development Statement for Kegworth Primary School
Intent
At Kegworth Primary School, we are committed to fostering the holistic development of every child, ensuring they are well-prepared for the challenges of life beyond the classroom. Our Personal Development is designed to instill key skills, values, and attributes that will empower our children to thrive as confident, responsible and resilient individuals.
Our intent encompasses:
- Promotion of British Values: We actively promote democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty, and mutual respect through a well-structured programme that encourages critical thinking and respect for different views.
- Emotional Intelligence: We aim to cultivate emotional literacy and self-awareness in our students, enabling them to understand and manage their emotions effectively.
- Cultural Awareness and Citizenship: Our curriculum promotes understanding of diverse cultures and communities, fostering a sense of belonging and social responsibility. Our diversity awareness allows each child to explore and discuss all protected characteristics.
- Physical Well-being: We place strong emphasis on physical health through an active lifestyle, ensuring our children understand the importance of physical fitness and mental well-being.
Implementation
To achieve our intent, we implement a comprehensive Personal Development programme that integrates across the curriculum and is visible in daily school life.
- Curriculum Design: Personal Development topics are woven throughout the curriculum, including PSHE (Personal, Social, Health and Economic Education), RE (Religious Education and World views), use of Commando Joe, our diversity annual curriculum and through explicit teaching during assemblies. We ensure these subjects are taught in an engaging and age-appropriate manner.
- Extracurricular Activities: We offer a wide range of extracurricular activities such as clubs, sports teams, and community service initiatives, all designed to enhance pupils' social skills and teamwork. Examples of these ae eco-clubs, community choir, fundamental clubs, sketching and digital leaders.
- Partnerships with Parents and Community: We regularly engage with parents, caregivers, and community leaders, providing workshops and resources to support the Personal Development of our children at home. Information on the school website is regularly updated and annual online safety workshop for parents can be attended.
- Ambassadors and Leadership Opportunities: Student leadership is recognised through roles such as Eco-Warriors, School Council members, Peer mentors, Year 6 buddies, Mental health ambassadors, House captains and librarians allowing children to take ownership and are encouraged of their Personal Development journey.
- Mental Health and Well-being Initiatives: Regular mindfulness sessions and emotional well-being workshops are implemented, alongside access to trained staff that can support pupils with their mental health needs through PSHE, 1:1 support, Lego therapy and ELSA support.
Impact
The impact of our Personal Development programme at Kegworth Primary is evident in the behaviours, achievements, and aspirations of our pupils.
- Confidence and Resilience: Children demonstrate increased confidence and resilience, assessed through self-reflection and feedback mechanisms. There’s a visible improvement in their ability to face challenges and set personal goals.
- Positive Relationships: Our initiatives foster positive relationships among peers and staff, promoting a harmonious school environment where students feel safe, valued, and respected. Behaviour logs and child voice surveys show few incidents of bullying and conflict.
- Community Engagement: Children actively participate in local and global initiatives, demonstrating a strong sense of social responsibility and ethical considerations, as reflected in community feedback and project outcomes. Demonstrated in the Kegworth park project and East Midlands art work.
- Healthy Lifestyles: Assessments indicate that children are making informed choices regarding their health and well-being, with increased participation in physical activities and an understanding of a balanced lifestyle. Evidence can be seen in inter-tournament participation, lunch clubs and after school club data.
- Academic and Personal Growth: The integration of Personal Development in the curriculum has led to holistic improvements in academic achievement and personal growth.
In conclusion, our Personal Development programme at Kegworth Primary exemplifies positive practice, nurturing well-rounded individuals who are prepared for future challenges and committed to positively contributing to society.
